Today's Tennis: Learning To Keep Score

Basic Terminology: Games, Sets and Match

Tennis scoring starts with winning games. Games makes a Set. Sets makes a Match.

Winning a Match determines the winner. The Match defines a winner as a Player winning "2 out of 3 Sets" or "3 out of 5 Sets".

Basic Terminology: Scoring

Scoring points in the game go: 0(love), 15, 30, 40, game.

This might seem strange but this is how points won are stated.

A player who wins 6 games by 2 wins a set.
A player who wins 2 of 3 sets win the match.

Basic Terminology: Tie Breaker

When tennis players win six games each, they generally play a tiebreaker to decide the winner of the set. If you’re playing a tiebreaker, follow these steps:

  • The next player to serve following the 12th game starts the serve to the opponents deuce court. Only one serve.
  • Now the other player serves twice, but serves into the ad court, then serves into the deuce court.
  • Serving continues between players, but always starting in the ad court and then the deuce court.
  • Players change court ends after six games and multiple of six games.
  • Play continues until a player wins 7 points or more by 2 points.
